ANAHEIM -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed Friday that Dan Haren will come off the 15-day disabled list Sunday to pitch against the first-place Texas Rangers.
That means that Haren will follow Ervin Santana in the Angels' rotation, which is appropriate since those two pitchers could dictate not only the course of this season, but how the front office approaches the July 31 trade deadline. It would be a lot easier to stand pat with the current 25-man roster -- and hold onto speedy outfielder Peter Bourjos -- if both guys show signs of turning around disappointing seasons.
Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said, however, that he won't let one or two starts from the veteran right-handers dictate how he approaches trade talks.
"To allow one start or one week to dictate how you act or react isn't very prudent," Dipoto said.
Haren (6-8, 4.86 ERA) allowed two runs and seven hits in Monday night's rehab start at Single-A Inland Empire and the stadium radar gun had his velocity in the 87 to 88 mph range. He went on the DL July 5 with lower back inflammation. Dipoto said, though, that the scouting reports he got off that start were encouraging.
"Dan has been that guy for a while," Dipoto said. "It's not about velocity as much as it is movement and how you locate it. He also knows how to structure pitch sequences in such a way that it augments what he's doing with his stuff."
Dipoto says he expects this to be a quiet trade deadline, not just for the Angels but league-wide, because the presence of a second wild-card spot has reduced the number of teams looking to shed salaries.
"There is a grand total of maybe five teams out of 30 who you can comfortably say are movers in the market," Dipoto said. "There's a whole lot of hullabaloo about the (Zack) Greinkes and (Cole) Hamels, but we don't even know if those guys are available. There is less definition to this trade market than I've ever been exposed to."
