Pujols back with the team

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels first baseman Albert Pujols rejoined the team Wednesday in Texas after missing Tuesday night’s 11-3 win over the Rangers to be with his wife, Deidre, in Kansas City, where she gave birth to the couple’s fifth child, Esther Grace, on Sunday morning.

“It’s where he needed to be,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “The fact that we were in Kansas City and the baby was born and he was able to play Sunday was great.”

Pujols played Sunday afternoon against Kansas City and stayed with Deidre in the hospital for a couple of extra days because their daughter was born about three weeks early. He arrived back in Anaheim on Wednesday morning.

“Anyone who has tried to discharge their wife and baby out of the hospital, you know what’s going on,” Sciosisa said. “It’s important for you to be there, and it’s where he needed to be. There’s no question.”
