Jorge Cantu opts for free agency

The Angels lost journeyman infielder Jorge Cantu on Monday when he opted out of his minor-league deal and became a free agent.

Cantu's contract stipulated he could opt out if he wasn't on the major-league roster by May 1. Cantu, 30, was batting .291 with four doubles and 11 RBIs at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Cantu said in March he might take a couple of months off from baseball to be with his girlfriend, Mexican actress and talk-show host Cynthia Urias, who is seven months' pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Cantu is a lifetime .281 hitter over eight seasons with five major-league teams. He drove in 95 or more runs in 2005, 2008 and 2009. Cantu’s chances of being called up to the Angels were slim because of a glut of corner infielders caused by the signing of Albert Pujols and the return of injured slugger Kendrys Morales.
