LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro was named the NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month for games played in December, the league announced Wednesday.
Del Negro led the Clippers to a 16-0 record in December, including wins over the Boston Celtics and three wins over the Utah Jazz. The Clippers' franchise-best 17-game winning streak, which included the sixteen December wins, ended with their first game in January. The streak stands as the longest in the NBA since the 2008 season, when Boston won 19 consecutive games.
The Clippers became the third team in NBA history to go 16-0 in a calendar month, joining the 1995-96 San Antonio Spurs and the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, who went on to win a record 33 games in a row. Del Negro was a starting guard on that Spurs team.
“We’re just trying to accumulate wins right now,” Del Negro said recently. “I think we had some adversity throughout the streak that the guys handled well. At Utah, down the way we were, the guys really stayed together and worked through it. I think it just shows our character as a team and what the guys expect from themselves.”
