Dodgers give struggling Puig a breather

MILWAUKEE -- A sore back and a little fatigue in the dog days of August prompted the removal of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig from the lineup Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

“I was going to give him a day today anyway,” manager Don Mattingly said. “To me, he looked tired the last couple of days. Just getting on and off the field he was kind of dragging and you can see it in his swing. But he texted (trainer) Stan (Conte) this morning and his back is a little sore so it works out. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, but I was going to give him a day today anyway.”

Andre Ethier started in center field, just his second start this month.

Puig has no home runs and just one extra-base hit in nine games this month. He is batting .219 with a .265 on-base percentage in August and has not driven in a run.
