Just before the Dodgers added a player to their camp roster by claiming outfielder Matt Angle off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, they subtracted a player from their camp roster by voiding the minor league contract of reliever Jose Ascanio, one of several non-roster pitchers set to vie for a spot in the bullpen.
Realistically, Ascanio would have been a long shot. But when he failed his physical exam (elbow), that made him a no-shot. Because Ascanio never stepped onto the field for a workout, the Dodgers aren't responsible for any further treatment, including surgery if he requires it.
Ascanio, 26, has spent parts of four seasons in the majors. He made eight big league appearances for the Pittsburgh Pirates last year, giving up two runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings.
