After the 1st period:
Pittsburgh Penguins 1, Kings 0
The good: Considering the time the Kings spent killing penalties in the period, getting to the locker room down by just a goal was a bonus. The biggest kill was a 5-on-3 that lasted more than two minutes, as Willie Mitchell, Ethan Moreau and Rob Scuderi went to the box within the same two-minute period. Even more impressive with the kill is Mitchell and Scuderi are two of the team’s better penalty killers.
The bad: The Kings have now gone scoreless in seven consecutive periods at home, and have one goal in the last 10. They came out with an eye on getting more shots on goal after producing a season-low 19 in a 3-0 loss Thursday night against Edmonton, and managed four in the first five minutes, but ended up with eight after spending so much time in the defensive zone trying to kill penalties.
The in between: The top line of Anze Kopitar, Justin Williams and Simon Gagne, who totaled one shot on goal in a 3-0 loss Thursday against visiting Edmonton, had four in the opening but at some point they’re going to have to hit the back of the net.
