Kings: Vancouver still dominant, but game still scoreless

Western Conference Quarterfinal

Game 3 (Kings lead series, 2-0)

After the 2nd period:

Kings 0, Vancouver Canucks 0

The good: Another big sigh of relief as the second period ended with the game was still scoreless. The Canucks have owned the time of possession and had most of the prime scoring chances, one requiring a brilliant toe save by Kings goalie Jonathan Quick on Chris Tanev with about 5 ½ minutes left in the period. That was just one of 14 saves in the second period by Quick, who has 25 overall. The Kings killed three more penalties in the second period, dropping the Canucks to 0-for-14 on the power play for the series.

The bad: The Kings have just 11 shots on net, which is especially troubling because they’ve had six power plays so far. The last two minutes of the second period in each of the three playoff games has been the worst part of the game for the Kings. They barely survived this one to get to the second intermission without falling behind. Jeff Carter is having a quiet night for the Kings. No shots on goal and two giveaways.

The in between: Kings captain Dustin Brown delivered the hit of the series on Vancouver’s leading scorer, Henrik Sedin, dropping him to the ice in agony and forcing Kevin Bieksa and Alex Burrows to go after Brown. They were unable to entice Brown to drop the gloves, so Burrows went after Anze Kopitar, who has never been involved in an NHL fight in his career. They grappled for a few moments before Burrows threw Kopitar on his back. Bieksa got an extra two minutes for roughing Brown, but again the Kings couldn’t capitalize. Sedin, whose twin brother, Daniel, has missed the first three games with a concussion, went to the locker room following the Brown hit but returned shortly afterward. Vancouver lost its composure after that play, getting called for interference and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties but, again, the Kings couldn’t take advantage of the extra man on the ice … Lakers star Kobe Bryant is in the house, watching the game with one of his daughters. He gave her a big hug when they were shown on the Kiss Cam.
