LONG BEACH -- Big-play Lakewood used a punt return by Darius Powe and a long run by X'avier Shepherd to overcome repeated penalties Friday night and hold off host Wilson, 42-28, in a Moore League opener.
Powe's 72-yard return gave the Lancers (4-1) the lead just 1:48 into the game, and Shepherd added a 65-yard third-quarter scamper to spoil an upset bid by the Bruins (2-3). Keith Franklin ran for three touchdowns for Lakewood, which was flagged 16 times for 126 yards, with a dozen of the penalties in the first half.
Wilson trimmed its deficit to a touchdown four times behind quarterback Brett Harper, who threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns (both to Malcom Smith) and ran for 102 and two more scores. The Bruins' used long drives, often extended by penalties, covering 60, 78, 55 and 80 yards (on 10, 18, 10 and 10 plays) for its points.
