O.C.: The Top 10

How far does Mission Viejo get penalized for dropping a game to Redlands East Valley? Not much, but a little; the Diablos haven't looked like the team most thought would be heading into South Coast League play. Injuries -- down three running backs -- may be part of it, but most good teams are dinged up.

1. (1) Servite (4-1)

A week removed from 31-28 loss to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, it's likely the Friars put the bye week to good use as they head into the Trinity League fire. Last: idle. Next: vs. Orange Lutheran at Cerritos College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

2. (3) Santa Margarita (5-0)

Eagles faced with a difficult opponent in Trinity League opener. To win the title, they have to beat a Mater Dei squad that has some confidence after successive victories. Last: idle. Next: vs. Mater Dei at Santa Ana Stadium, Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

3. (2) Mission Viejo (4-2)

Where was the team that scored 31 points against Carson? Body of work -- quality wins over Long Beach Poly and Carson -- keep Diablos ahead of Lutheran. Last: lost to Redlands East Valley, 10-7. Next: at Dana Hills, Friday, 7 p.m.

4. (4) Orange Lutheran (5-0)

The pressing question: Should OLu move ahead of Mission Viejo? If it beats Servite this week, it won't be a pressing question at all. Last: Idle. Next: vs. Servite at Cerritos College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

5. (5) San Clemente (6-0)

Tritons haven't exactly turned the world on its ear since emotional win over Mater Dei. Mistakes have been the hallmark of victory last week and against Newport Harbor. Last: beat West Adams Prep, 35-6. Next: at Trabuco Hills, Friday, 7 p.m.

6. (6) Mater Dei (2-3)

Monarchs have won two in a row, but they know too well that the Trinity League won't be nearly as easy as their most recent victory. Last: beat Gardena, 52-16. Next: vs. Santa Margarita at Santa Ana Stadium, Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

7. (7) La Habra (2-3)

The Highlanders share the worst nonleague record in the Freeway League, and have the worst team defense, but they're also head and shoulders above everyone else in the league. Last: idle. Next: vs. Sunny Hills at Buena Park HS, Friday, 7 p.m.

8. (8) Edison (3-2)

Chargers have lost two in a row heading into the Sunset opener that should determine the league champion; playing Servite and Mater Dei was supposed to get them ready for this moment. Last: idle. Next: vs. Los Alamitos at Huntington Beach HS, Thursday, 7 p.m.

9. (9) Los Alamitos (4-1)

Griffins breezed through four games that didn't prove anything, then were overmatched against Santa Margarita. They won't be overmatched this week, but will they have learned everything they need from the preseason? Last: Idle. Next: vs. Edison at Huntington Beach HS, Thursday, 7 p.m.

10. (10) Trabuco Hills (5-1)

Mitchell Simonsen sat out last week because of a groin injury. If he doesn't play this week, be assured the Mustangs won't score 48 like they did Friday night. Last: beat San Juan Hills, 47-7. Next: vs. San Clemente, Friday, 7 p.m.
