L.A. South: The Top 10

Tough losses by Bishop Amat and Lakewood paved the way for some changes in our south Los Angeles County top 10 rankings heading into Week 7. (Note: Last week's rankings are in parentheses.)

1. (1) Long Beach Poly (6-1)

It wouldn't be Poly without a little controversy, but the two-quarterback system seems to be working for coach Raul Lara. Starter Chaiyse Hales and backup Nick Pope combined for 219 passing yards in an important Moore League win. Last week: Beat Lakewood, 38-21. Next: at Millikan, Oct. 28.

2. (3) Loyola (5-1)

No game for the Cubs last week, but they move up a spot thanks to Bishop Amat's loss to Alemany in the Serra League opener. Loyola begins the Serra against Notre Dame, which is coming off a stinging loss to Crespi. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at L.A. Valley College, Friday.

3. (4) St. John Bosco (5-1)

Four more touchdown passes for Rene Medina, who is the top statistical quarterback in the Trinity League. The electrifying Bryce Treggs had a 90-yard touchdown catch and returned a punt for another score. Last week: Beat JSerra, 48-14. Next: vs. Mater Dei, Friday.

4. (2) Bishop Amat (5-2)

The troubled defense couldn't come up with a stop late in Friday's game and time simply ran out on the Lancers. Workhorse Jalen Moore had 112 yards rushing but there weren't enough big plays in important moments. Last week: Lost to Alemany, 26-21. Next: at Crespi, Friday.

5. (6) Charter Oak (5-1)

OK, who's controlling the joystick? Quarterback Travis Santiago passed for 325 yards, ran for 54 more and had five total touchdowns to open Sierra League play in fine fashion. Try doing that in a video game. Last week: Beat South Hills, 63-28. Next: vs. Ayala, Friday.

6. (7) Narbonne (4-2)

Twenty-two completions out of 29 attempts for the strong-armed Troy Williams on Friday night. The junior quarterback racked up 237 yards, bringing his total to a City Section-leading 1,549 on the season. Last week: Beat Gardena, 43-20. Next: vs. Carson, Friday.

7. (5) Lakewood (5-2)

Quarterback Brock Dale did all he could against Poly's relentless pressure but, more often than not, wound up on the turf. Darius Powe and Malik Gilmore had touchdown receptions but the offense was stagnant. Last week: Lost to Long Beach Poly, 38-21. Next: at Cabrillo, Friday.

8. (8) Carson (3-3)

Roger Jones scored a pair of touchdowns and ran for 93 yards in his return from a shoulder injury, and Kevin McMahon found Darreus Rogers for a 75-yard bomb. Good momentum heading into the one they've all been waiting for. Last week: Beat Banning, 30-9. Next: at Narbonne, Friday.

9. (9) Dorsey (5-1)

Quite a difference from last year as defense keeps proving to be the Dons' strength. They've allowed an average of 11.3 points per game, by far the least among Coliseum League schools. Last week: Beat West Adams, 21-12. Next: vs. Manual Arts at Rancho Cienega Park, Friday.

10. (NR) San Pedro (6-0)

Another game, another blowout for the undefeated Pirates. Senior Kenny Potter is one of the better pro-style quarterbacks in the area. Four of his six completions Friday went for touchdowns. He sat out the entire second half. Last week: Beat Washington, 48-12. Next: vs. Gardena, Friday.

Dropped out: St. Paul (10).

Newcomer: San Pedro.

Ten more, in alphabetic order: Cabrillo (6-1), Covina (6-1), Damien (5-1), Dominguez (4-2), Gahr (5-1), Maranatha (6-0), St. Paul (5-1), San Dimas (5-1), Serra (4-2), West Covina (6-1).
