The Canyon football team will have to forfeit its Foothill League finale game against Golden Valley because the team used an ineligible player, but it will not affect its playoff standing.
Canyon coach Rich Gutierrez said he used an ineligible player at the end of the game when he was emptying his bench in a 48-21 blowout against Golden Valley. Canyon was up 42-7 in the fourth quarter. The player in question was on the field for two plays, Gutierrez said.
He blamed the use of the ineligible player on a "paperwork snafu."
"It's an unforeseeable circumstance," Gutierrez said. "The kids will have the league title taken from them."
Canyon finished in a tie for first place with Valencia in the Foothill League standings. It was Canyon's first league championship since 2006, when the Cowboys won a CIF state bowl game.
The forfeit will not affect Canyon's place in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs. The Cowboys play host to Palmdale in the first round of playoffs on Friday night.
Golden Valley is credited with its first Foothill League in school history.
