Damien can silence critics Saturday

Despite sitting atop the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 3AAA boys' basketball poll, La Verne Damien (20-1) may have some doubters. The Spartans can silence some critics Saturday when they take on Etiwanda (21-1) in the Southern California Shootout at Azusa Pacific University.

"To be honest, our goal isn't to impress anybody else," Damien coach Matt Dunn said. "We want to feel really good about playing to our potential. Having an opportunity to play somebody that will test you before the playoffs, that's what it's really all about."

Two years ago at the same event, Damien lost to Etiwanda, 58-57.

"I love playing Etiwanda," Dunn said. "I think, maybe more than anybody else, they do it right. They defend the heck out of you, they share the ball. I'm so impressed by their program. I love playing them; it sounds silly to say you love playing a great program but when you have that much respect about the way they go about doing things, it becomes a great opportunity."
