The nationally ranked Temecula Great Oak and Vista Murrieta girls’ cross-country teams are on a collision course to compete Saturday at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational in Walnut, considered one of the top meets of the regular season.
Both are entered in the prestigious girls’ team sweepstakes race, scheduled to begin at 9:55 a.m.
Great Oak is ranked No. 6 in the nation in the latest ESPN/Rise team rankings and Vista Murrieta is No. 12.
Other ranked teams entered in the race are No. 23 Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills, No. 30 Torrey Pines, No. 31 Dana Hills, No. 33 Carlsbad La Costa Canyon and No. 47 Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.
Great Oak returned six of its top seven runners from a year ago, when the Wolfpack finished second at the Division I state finals. Vista Murrieta finished eighth in the same race.
Great Oak is led by twins Katie and Anna Johnson, who earlier this season helped the Wolfpack run away with the team sweepstakes title at the Woodbridge Invitational. Anna finished fourth and Katie was sixth.
Vista Murrieta will count on a high finish from Erika Reddish, who was fourth at the Inland Empire Challenge at Glen Helen Regional Park on Oct. 9, helping the Broncos win the team title. That same weekend, the top runners for Great Oak were competing at the Manhattan Invitational in New York, where they combined to finish second.
