GRANADA HILLS – Paraclete’s Braydon Maish made two game-changing plays in the fourth quarter to lead his team to a 14-7 win over Sierra Canyon in the CIF Southern Section East Valley Division championship.
He scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 13-yard reception from quarterback Cameron Carvalho midway through the fourth quarter at Granada Hills High School on Saturday night.
Maish then intercepted Sierra Canyon quarterback Tyler Stewart on the ensuing drive. Both plays came after three quarters of turnover football by both teams.
Paraclete committed four turnovers, two in the end zone. Stewart threw two interceptions for Sierra Canyon as neither team could find much of a rhythm on offense.
“My kudos to Sierra Canyon,” Paraclete coach Norm Dahlia said. “That’s a great defense. They’re a hell of a football team.”
Sierra Canyon took the lead early in the game, scoring a touchdown in the second quarter on an 8-yard catch by Julian Brooks.
Paraclete tied the score, 7-7, on a 2-yard touchdown run by Ryan Davis with 4:50 to play in the first half.
That’s when the turnovers started piling up. Sierra Canyon drove 83 yards and had a first-and-goal on the 2-yard line with less than a minute to play in the first half.
Paraclete’s Roosevelt Davis intercepted Stewart on a floater in the end zone. Paraclete took over on its own 20-yard line and stopped Sierra Canyon’s drive.
On the ensuing drive, Sierra Canyon’s Danny Jordan intercepted Carvalho near midfield with three seconds to play in the half.
On the opening drive of the second half, Sierra Canyon forced another turnover. Roosevelt Davis caught a screen pass and fumbled at midfield. Jackson Bates pounced on the loose ball and Sierra Canyon took over on its own 44-yard line.
Sierra Canyon couldn’t move the ball and Paraclete’s Will Pretty came up with a 20-yard sack of Stewart that sent Sierra Canyon to its own 13-yard line.
Later in the third quarter, Paraclete drove 65 yards and had a first-and-goal on the 2-yard line. Ryan Davis plunged up the middle on the goal line for what looked like his second touchdown of the game. But he fumbled on the 1-yard line and Sierra Canyon recovered in the end zone for a touchback.
Again, Sierra Canyon couldn’t move the ball and punted the ball away from its own end zone, setting up Paraclete’s game-winning drive.
Paraclete took over on the Sierra Canyon 28-yard line and drove to the 13-yard line on three plays. On second-and-6 from the 13, Carvalho hit Maish with the pass over the middle at the goal line. Maish dove for the end zone and scored with 7:22 remaining in the game.
Maish caught three passes for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan Davis rushed for 114 yards on 27 carries and scored a touchdown for Paraclete (13-1).
“Ryan Davis tonight was just huge,” Dahlia said. “They’ve been a team since Day One. It was a 100 percent team effort.”
Stewart threw for 198 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Brooks caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown for Sierra Canyon (13-2).
It was the eighth CIF championship for Paraclete and the second in the past three seasons. Paraclete has won seven CIF championships in the past 12 seasons.
