Orange County: A couple of close calls in the easy round

The first round of the playoffs is supposed to be the easiest for any team of distinction. It's the gimme home game before the real battles begin.

Tell that to Mission Viejo.

The second-seeded Diablos (26-1) escaped the first round of the Southern Section boys' basketball playoffs with a 41-39 victory over Burbank (16-12) in Division 2AA. It's hardly the start a team that was nearly perfect during the regular season would have expected, but Burbank limited 6-foot-10 Isaac Neilson to just six points. Neverthless, Mission Viejo got it done despite generally anemic scoring—held to eight points in the second quarter and five in the fourth—and it can start fresh in preparation for Redondo Union (15-13), which defeated Orange League champion Katella, 59-52.

For Mission Viejo to advance, it will have to do it on the road.

The first round was good to Orange County teams in 2AA as seven teams won their openers, including fifth-seeded Edison (25-2), which scored a 56-54 victory over Sunny Hills (18-10). Like Mission Viejo, the Sunset League co-champion was supposed to have an easier time of it, but needed every one of Dylan Garrity's 32 points, which propelled him to the top of the school's all-time scoring list.

In Division 1A, a big South OC matchup is on the horizon as third-seeded Capistrano Valley (21-6) and San Clemente (15-12) both won; they'll play Friday at San Clemente. That place should be rocking. Other all-county matchups feature La Palma Kennedy (21-6) at Corona del Mar (18-9) and Sonora(22-4) at Cypress (17-10) in Division 3AA.
