VALENCIA – The Etiwanda boys basketball team jumped out to a 10-0 head start that proved to be too much for Valencia to overcome in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs at Valencia High School on Tuesday night.
Etiwanda’s Byron Wesley scored 27 points to lead his team to a 70-58 win over Valencia.
Wesley and Jordan Daniels combined to score 10 points, five apiece, in the first quarter. Etiwanda led 16-11 after the first quarter after holding Valencia scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game.
Daniels hit a 3-pointer with 4:40 to play in the first quarter to give Etiwanda a 10-0 lead.
Valencia cut the lead to five points by the end of the first quarter. The Vikings closed within three points midway through the second quarter.
But Etiwanda pushed its lead back to 10 points, 28-18, on a 3-pointer by Troy Fiawoo with 3:30 to play before halftime. Etiwanda maintained its 10-point lead, 30-20, at halftime.
Valencia rallied again in the third quarter and cut the lead to four points, 36-32, with a little more than five minutes to play.
Etiwanda (28-2) took an eight-point lead, 47-39, into the fourth quarter. Valencia cut Etiwanda’s lead to five points, 51-46, with 5:41 to play in the game, but that was as close and Valencia would get.
Daniels finished with 12 points and eight assists. He only committed one turnover, and that came late in the fourth quarter. Fiawoo scored nine points and had 10 rebounds.
Lonnie Jackson led Valencia (21-8) with 21 points. Martin Flowers had 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Zach Davis scored 10 points and had eight rebounds.
