VENTURA – The Ventura boys basketball team erased a 15-point, third-quarter deficit and rallied to beat Compton, 70-58, in the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs on Friday night at Ventura College.
Compton was up, 38-29, at halftime and went on a 6-0 run to start the third quarter to take a 44-29 lead.
Compton’s Allan Guei capped the 6-0 run with a layup at the 6:17 mark of the third quarter. Compton didn’t score again until there were 42 seconds left in the quarter.
Meanwhile, Ventura clawed back. Dylan Houck cut the Compton lead to one point, 44-43, when he stole the ball, scored a breakaway basket and was fouled with 1:56 to play in the quarter.
He gave his team a one-point lead, 45-44, on a pair of free throws after a technical foul on Compton with 1:12 to play in the third.
Houck capped an 18-0 run with another layup to give his team a three-point lead, 47-44.
Lewis Melvin finally ended the Compton scoring drought with a pair of free throws in the final minute of the quarter.
Ventura ended the third quarter with a three-point lead, 49-46.
Compton’s leading scorer, Victor Robbins, fouled out of the game with 5:17 to play in the fourth quarter. He fouled Houck, who made two free throws and extended Ventura’s lead to seven points, 57-50.
Houck finished with a game-high 22 points. He was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Jon McMurry and Zach Gwin each scored 11 points for Ventura. McMurry was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Gwin was 7-for-9.
Ventura (28-2) was 30-for-34 from the free-throw line as a team.
Robbins finished with a team-high 19 points before fouling out. Guei scored 17 for Compton (21-10).
Ventura will play Mission Viejo in next week's title game. Mission Viejo defeated Summitt in overtime in the other semifinal.
