Ocean View (29-4) will play Gardena Serra (31-2) in the Division III boys' regional final Saturday, 7 p.m., at El Camino College and intensity should be high. The visiting Seahawks defeated Serra, 46-41, in last year's semifinals en route to winning the Southern Section 4AA title. This season Serra exacted some revenge by beating the Seahawks in the title game of the Ocean View Tournament of Champions, 72-65.
Tournament and playoff games aren't the same but expect each team to use whatever motivation necessary to reach the height of focus: Serra to pay back last year's loss, Ocean View to avenge defeat in its own tournament.
Anthony Brown and Avery Johnson are both averaging 17.5 points for Ocean View. If it gets another big night from both -- they had 29 and 24 respectively against Verdugo Hills in a second-round win Thursday -- then the Seahawks may have what it takes to beat Serra. But make no mistake, Ocean View will have its hands full regardless of what Brown and Johnson do. Keith Shamburger and Vaughn Autry are fomidible, and Serra seems especially driven: The team is playing in memory of Autry's father, Stephen, who died shortly before the playoffs began.
