The boys' volleyball match between Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar on Friday, the Battle of the Bay, will be more than just a showdown between two of the top programs and rivals in Orange County. It is also going to be a fundraiser for former Newport player Liz Lord.
Lord was diagnosed with an inoperable, and incurable, brain tumor. She will undergo radiation and chemotherapy treatment, and there will be several opportunities to make donations to the cause.
The match is being billed “Fight for Liz: Beyond the Battle of the Bay” and the funds raised from donations, raffles and T-shirt sales will to go toward offsetting considerable personal and medical expenses.
The frosh-soph match gets festivities under way at 4:30, followed by the JV and then the varsity match somewhere around 6 p.m. Here’s a good story about Lord, a 2002 graduate who was a member of Newport Harbor’s 1999 state championship team.
No matter what, the boys' volleyball action figures to be pretty good, too. Newport is ranked No. 4 in the Southern Section Division 1 rankings, and Corona del Mar is No. 1 in Division 2.
