VALENCIA -- The Valencia baseball team exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning en route to a 17-7 blowout over Moorpark in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Friday.
James Bonds capped the eight-run outburst with a two-run home run. Shane Zeile knocked in two runs with a single and Quincy Quintero plated two more with a double.
Moorpark balked in two runs in the fifth inning.
Moorpark took the early lead in the game, scoring three runs in the second inning.
Valencia rallied back to tie the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the second.
Moorpark went back on top, 6-3, scoring three more runs in the top of the third. Sean Houlihan and Blake Barnes came up with two-out RBI hits. Houlihan knocked in two with a single. Barnes followed with an RBI double.
Valencia took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Vikings scored five runs to go up 8-6. Adam Lightfoot delivered the big blow with a bases-loaded double that scored three runs.
Quintero drove in a run with a single and Alex Bishop added and RBI double.
Moorpark pushed across another run in the top of the fourth to cut Valencia’s lead to one run.
After Valencia’s eight-run fifth inning, the Vikings scored one more run in the sixth.
It was the 250th win of Valencia coach Jared Snyder’s career.
Valencia will play Dana Hills in the second round. Dana Hills beat Oxnard, 6-0.
