ESPNLA prep football top 25: Week 1

Opening week has come and gone, and only one team in the top 10 of the ESPNLA.com Top 25 prep football preseason rankings lost. Three teams fell completely out following rather lackluster performances but, other than that, there was no drastic movement. Here are our rankings heading into Week 1:

1. Servite (1-0)

New year, new names, same old story. Coach Troy Thomas' bunch just finds ways to win. Last week: Beat Oceanside, 20-0. Next: vs. No. 7 Bishop Amat, Friday.

2. Corona Centennial (0-0)

The Huskies' uptempo attack and new quarterback Hayden Gavett get a tough first test. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. No. 9 St. Bonaventure, Friday.

3. Mission Viejo (1-0)

A successful opening weekend was spoiled by senior transfer Buzzy Yokoyama's leg injury. Last week: Beat Bakersfield Centennial, 35-6. Next: at Don Bosco Prep (N.J.), Saturday.

4. Long Beach Poly (1-0)

The Jackrabbits traveled north and pulled out a thrilling victory against the state's No. 7-ranked team. Last week: Beat Sacramento Grant, 24-23. Next: vs. No. 8 Carson at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Friday.

5. Alemany (1-0)

Devon Dunn had no problems in his first career varsity start. The junior threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Last week: Beat Pasadena, 55-0. Next: vs. Lancaster Eastside, Friday.

6. Santa Margarita (1-0)

Concerns about the Eagles' defensive inexperience have, at least momentarily, been put to rest. Last week: Beat Long Beach Jordan, 56-0. Next: vs. No. 24 Tesoro at Saddleback College, Friday.

7. Bishop Amat (1-0)

The Lancers struggled to get into the end zone and now try their luck against one of the state's best defenses. Last week: Beat Garfield, 14-0. Next: vs. No. 1 Servite at Cerritos College, Friday.

8. Carson (1-0)

We have an early leader for City Section player of the year and his name is Darreus Rogers (231 receiving yards, three TDs). Last week: Beat Mater Dei, 26-22. Next: vs. No. 4 Long Beach Poly at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Friday.

9. St. Bonaventure (0-0)

The Marmonte League favorite gets a chance to prove its worth against the best the Inland Empire has to offer. Last week: Idle. Next: at No. 2 Corona Centennial, Friday.

10. Crespi (1-0)

The Celts' first performance must have raised some eyebrows and caught the attention of other Serra League teams. Last week: Beat Dominguez, 48-6. Next: vs. L.A. Jordan, Friday.

11. Oaks Christian (0-1)

Too many turnovers and too many mistakes led to a repeat of last year's season-opening defeat. Last week: Lost to Bellevue (WA), 31-21. Next: at Agoura, Sept. 16.

12. St. John Bosco (1-0)

Bryce Treggs, Royce Moore, Rene Medina and Co. look to avenge last year's home loss to Big Red. Last week: Beat Mission Hills, 27-0. Next: at No. 15 Lakewood, Friday.

13. Westlake (1-0)

They needed overtime to do it but the Warriors got the job done away from home. Kicker Alex Ball was the hero. Last week: Beat Loomis Del Oro, 30-27. Next: vs. Calabasas, Sept. 16.

14. Mater Dei (0-1)

A tough first game but some bright spots for the Monarchs, who led on the road with less than 10 seconds left. Last week: Lost to Carson, 26-22. Next: vs. No. 2 Corona Centennial, Sept. 16.

15. Lakewood (1-0)

A quarterback battle continues between senior transfer Brock Dale and junior Chris Bell. They worked well as a tandem, though. Last week: Beat Locke, 46-22. Next: vs. No. 12 St. John Bosco, Friday.

16. Rancho Cucamonga (1-0)

Quarterback Dimitri Morales amassed 270 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in the Cougars' rout. Last week: Beat Silverado, 52-0. Next: vs. Great Oak, Friday.

17. Orange Lutheran (1-0)

Look no further than Lutheran to gauge the difficulty of playing in the Trinity League. The Lancers beat Utah's top team handily. Last week: Beat Bingham (UT), 42-7. Next: vs. Los Osos at Orange Coast College, Friday.

18. Norco (0-0)

Coach Todd Gerhart's son, quarterback Coltin Gerhart, looks to take the next step in his second year. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. Crenshaw, Friday.

19. Chaminade (0-0)

The Eagles hope to break in their new blue turf in style against a City Section sleeper in one of the Valley's top games. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. Venice, Friday.

20. San Clemente (1-0)

A preseason coaching scandal didn't affect the Tritons, who were led by quarterback Travis Wilson's arm in the opener. Last week: Beat Cabrillo, 35-6. Next: vs. Fountain Valley at Westminster High, Thursday.

21. Vista Murrieta (0-0)

Ninth-year coach Coley Candaele has 13 total returning starters at his disposal. Look out, Southwestern League. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. Etiwanda at Colony, Friday.

22. Canyon Country Canyon (0-0)

Former assistant Rich Gutierrez will coach his first game since taking over for Chris Varner in the offseason. Last week: Idle. Next: vs. Burroughs, Friday.

23. S.O. Notre Dame (1-0)

Leading the upset bid was junior tailback Khalfani Muhammad, who gained 186 all-purpose yards and scored a pair of touchdowns. Last week: Beat Gardena Serra, 35-13. Next: vs. Valencia, Friday.

24. Tesoro (1-0)

Nate Tago reached the end zone on four of his 11 carries. Last week: Beat Hart, 35-21. Next: vs. No. 6 Santa Margarita at Saddleback College, Friday.

25. Upland (1-0)

More than two minutes remained in the first half Friday and the Highlanders had already put up 63 points. They took their foot off the gas pedal. Last week: Beat San Bernardino, 63-14. Next: at Tustin, Friday.
