Orange County: Athletes of the week

Alyssa Giannetti, Esperanza, Jr.

You don't win soccer matches without playing a little defense, and Giannetti plays plentyfor the Aztecs. They extended their unbeaten streak to 46 matches and won the Aliso Cup by beating Dana Hills on penalty kicks, 3-2, after the match ended in regulation at 1-1. Esperanza improved to 4-0-2 after Giannetti blocked a penalty kick by Rachel Edelstein. Esperanza also scored a 1-0 victory over Los Alamitos in the semifinals.

Cody Pittman, Servite, Jr.

Other athletes had flashier weeks and scored more touchdowns, but none might have been vindicated the way that Pittman was. The big question mark at the beginning of the season, and tasked with filling the shoes of one of the state's outstanding players in Cody Fajardo, Pittman guided his team to a second consecutive Pac-5 title. Tailback Malik Felton scored four TDs, but Pittman was crucial early on when the game was won: He finished an efficient nine of 15 for 213 yards and two touchdowns, and he also carried 13 times for 77 yards to help second-seeded Servite score a 41-27 victory over previously undefeated and top-seeded Mission Viejo.
