I.E.: R.C, Great Oak favored for XC titles

The Rancho Cucamonga boys and Great Oak girls are the top-ranked teams in Division 1 heading into the Southern Section cross-country championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Rancho Cucamonga is led by senior Luis Gutierrez, who won his preliminary heat in 14 minutes 32 seconds last weekend on the same 2.9-mile course at Mt. SAC. Bryan Guijarro of Knight was the top qualifier at 14.19, followed by Porter Reddish of Vista Murrieta at 14:29.

The Cougars, ranked fifth in the nation by ESPN, will also count on seniors Calvin Davis and Jon Deliva and juniors Austin Esposito and Kevin Matthews. The Division 1 boys' race is scheduled to begin at 10:05 a.m.

Great Oak, the defending Division 1 state champion, is paced by sophomores Christian Calain and Haley Dorris, juniors Ashley Ortega, Kim McNamee and Alexis Messerly and seniors Carly Bauer and Taylor Maggiacomo, who was the team's top qualifier last weekend.

Laura Hollander of Marina was the top qualifer in Division 1 at 16:21, followed by Adriana Olivas of Corona Centennial in 16:24. The Division 1 girls' race is scheduled to begin at 9:05 a.m.
