Alemany routs Cathedral Catholic

MISSION HILLS -- Marqueze Coleman scored 31 points against Cathedral Catholic from San Diego to lead the Alemany boys' basketball team to an 84-64 blowout win in a CIF Southern California Regional Division III semifinal on Tuesday night.

Four Alemany players scored in double figures and handed Cathedral Catholic its worse loss of the season.

Both teams came in with 30 wins. Cathedral Catholic had three losses, none by more than five points.

Alemany, the No. 4 team in the ESPN Los Angeles top 20 rankings, took a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and held Cathedral scoreless for the first three minutes of the game.

Coleman led the first-quarter charge scoring six of the first nine points, throwing down two dunks in the opening minutes.

“It’s great getting this far in the season,” the Nevada-bound Coleman said. “It feels great. We got just two more games to go.”

Despite jumping out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter, Alemany let Cathedral back in the game. The Dons went on a 8-2 run to end the first quarter and cut the Alemany lead to five points.

Cathedral (30-4) kept the pressure on in the second quarter and went into halftime down a point, 36-35. Xavier Williams scored 10 points in the first half for Cathedral.

Coleman had a monster first half for Alemany with 19 points.

Alemany (31-4) opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a 10-point lead. Warriors point guard Max Guercy scored eight of his 16 points in the third quarter and helped Alemany build a 16-point lead. He scored 14 points in the second half, but Coleman said Guercy did a great job of leading the offense throughout the game.

“I don’t think he had a slow first half,” Coleman said. “I think he found the people that were hot. That’s what a point guard is supposed to do. He did a great job. He led us to victory today.”

Cathedral’s Michael Rosenburg hit a full-court heave at the end of third quarter to cut the Alemany lead to 13 points, 63-50, but it was one of the few highlights for the Dons.

Bear Henderson scored 16 points, 10 in the second half, and had seven rebounds for Alemany. K.J. Moffett added 10 points for the Warriors.

Niksha Federico scored 14 points off the bench for Cathedral.

Alemany will play St. John Bosco, 53-51 winners over Pasadena, in the Division III Southern California Regional final on Saturday.
