Narbonne girls rally for City title

CARSON -- Kimberly Pickett came up with big shot after big shot in Narbonne’s come-from-behind, 50-44, victory in the CIF City Section Division I girls basketball championship game at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night.

She hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer in the fourth quarter to give her team a five-point lead. She hit two free throws in the closing seconds of the game to push the lead to six points. Her points came early and at key moments for Narbonne as well.

She hit a 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to tie the score, 8-8. She scored a game-high 25 points and made five 3-pointers.

“I just try to keep my composure throughout the whole game,” Pickett said. “I’ve been in situations before when time was running down and I had to knock down some crucial free throws. I just tried to keep my composure and not let my team down, tried my hardest to get the W.”

Fairfax (22-10) led, 23-17, at halftime. The Lions went on a 10-1 run in the first two minutes of the second quarter to take a nine-point lead, 18-9. Angelica Laury scored the first four points of the run for Fairfax.

Narbonne tied the score, 29-29, in the third quarter on a basket by Alexsis McCowan. Laury and Jonette Uy De Ong scored in the closing minutes of the third quarter to give Fairfax a 33-31 lead.

Narbonne (27-6) took its first lead of the game on a basket by Leticia Smith early in the fourth quarter. Her basket gave the Gauchos a two-point lead, 37-35, with seven minutes to play in the game. Narbonne extended the lead to five points, 40-35, before Fairfax cut it to two at the end of the third.

Pickett continued to score big baskets for Narbonne. Her 3-pointer to beat the shot clock early in the fourth quarter gave her team a 44-39 lead.

Smith scored 10 points for Narbonne. She and Pickett were the only players from Narbonne to score in double figures.

Laury led Fairfax with 16 points and Uy De Ong scored 12.
