O.C.: Division 1 baseball gets painted orange

Five of 10 wild card games in the Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs had winners from Orange County; only one of the games featured two O.C. teams facing each other, and that ended in a surprising 3-0 victory by Brea Olinda over JSerra.

Brea (15-13-1) finished fifth in the Century League while JSerra (12-16) finished in a tie for third place in the Trinity League but gave top-seeded Orange Lutheran a battle last week before losing, 1-0, and fell a week before that to second-seeded Mater Dei, 5-4.

Credit to Brea's Nick Kern for firing a one-hitter, and getting RBI support from Cameron Bishop, Kyle Cawdrey and Cody Stoerck.

O.C. went 4-2 in other games involving opponents from outside the county: Capistrano Valley beat Oxnard Pacifica, 4-2; Huntington Beach beat Temecula Great Oak, 7-0; Edison beat Temecula Chaparral, 2-0; El Modena beat Bellflower St. John Bosco, 6-1; Riverside Poly beat Anaheim Canyon, 7-6, in nine innings; and Corona Santiago beat San Clemente, 11-2.

By virtue of El Modena's win over St. John Bosco, the Century League went 2-0 against the Trinity League.

Thirteen of the 32 teams in the first round are from Orange County, and 10 of the 16 games to be played on Friday will have a representative from the O.C.

After El Modena's victory, the marquee games figure to be ElMo at El Toro (24-6), and El Dorado (16-11) at Tesoro (18-10-1). The game pitting Brea at Marmonte League champ Agoura (21-4-1) got a lot more interesting, too.

Notably in Division 2, Trabuco Hills scored a 5-4 victory over Loyola which, in its previous game, had scored a 7-3 victory over the team that had been No. 1 in the state, North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake. The Mustangs (14-13) tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning on Trevor Petersen's two-run single, and got an RBI from Sean McCarrell in the bottom of the seventh to stun Loyola (19-10-1).

Trabuco Hills will play at Channel League champion Goleta Dos Pueblos when the first round for that division begins on Thursday.

O.C. was 4-1 in Division 2 wild card games: Placentia Valencia won at Yucaipa, 1-0; Tustin won at Riverside La Sierra, 13-4; San Juan Hills won at Ventura Buena, 6-4; and La Palma Kennedy lost at home to Moreno Valley Rancho Verde, 3-2. Home teams went 9-7 in the wild card games in Division 2.

When Division 2 plays first-round games on Thursday, eight of the 16 games will include an O.C. team.
