LA North and Inland Empire: First-round CIF Southern Section baseball playoff games

Perhaps the most intriguing matchup in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 baseball playoffs is Royal vs. Vista Murrieta.

Royal (20-9) had to win a wild-card game against Villa Park to advance to the first-round of the playoffs. Behind a three-run fourth inning, Royal came away with a 4-2 win.

Vista Murrieta (21-5) is the third-seeded team in the Division 1 playoffs. The Broncos won the Southwestern League and is one of the top teams in the state, ranked in the top 10 by a number of outlets.

Junior infielder Jeff Moberg leads Vista Murrieta with a .488 batting average in 26 games. He had a 19-game hitting streak to open the season and got at least one hit in every game but two. He is also 12-for-16 in stolen bases.

Senior infielder Holger Robalino leads Vista Murrieta with four home runs and is second on the team with 23 RBIs. He is hitting .407 in 26 games.

Junior outfielder Justin Greco leads Royal with four home runs and 34 RBIs in 27 games. He is hitting .316 with nine doubles.

Royal junior infielder Atherton Kniseley has four home runs and 19 RBIs in 26 games. He has a .312 batting average. Royal has three players hitting .400 or better.

Here is look at some of the other key first-round games from teams in the LA North area:

Tesoro (18-13) at Westlake (19-8)

Westlake freshman shortstop Luke Dykstra is hitting .396. He leads the team in doubles with 10, hit two home runs and drove in 15. Tesoro senior first baseman Connor Spencer leads the team with 23 RBIs and is hitting .395 in 31 games.

Moorpark (18-10) at Valencia (20-6)

Moorpark is coming off a 7-0 win over Millikan in the wild-card round. Matt Higginbotham tossed a two-hitter and had three doubles for Moorpark. Valencia sophomore AJ Balta leads his team with 11 home runs and has knocked in 25 runs. He is hitting .422 in 26 games.

Fountain Valley (16-11) at Simi Valley (17-10)

Fountain Valley beat St. John Bosco, 4-1, in the wild-card round. Simi Valley senior Cody Ramer leads the team with five home runs and 25 RBIs. He is hitting .470 in 22 games. The Simi Valley team has hit 10 home runs this season.

Newbury Park (18-9) at Camarillo (21-4-1)

Newbury Park junior centerfielder Joe Christian leads the team with four home runs and 27 RBIs. He is hitting .397 in 26 games. Camarillo’s Hunter Virant clinched the Pacific View championship pitching his team to a 3-2 win over Oxnard. He went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits. He also had three hits in the game, two doubles and a single.

Los Alamitos (12-13-1) at Hart (20-6)

Los Alamitos senior outfielder Moises Montes leads his team with three home runs and 19 RBIs. Hart has a pair of aces in Garrett Gooding and Tyler Glasnow. Each pitcher has a 7-2 record. Glasnow has 90 strikeouts in 60 2/3 innings and a 1.27 ERA. Gooding has 63 strikeouts in 51 innings.
