LA North and Orange County: Westlake upsets top-seeded Mater Dei in CIF volleyball playoffs

Westlake will play Corona del Mar for the CIF Southern California Regional Division II championship today at Irvine Valley College.

Westlake, the fifth-seeded team in the Southern California Regional, beat Mater Dei of Santa Ana in five games in the semifinal match at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach on Thursday.

The Warriors won the first game, but dropped the next two before winning a marathon fourth game, 29-27, to force a deciding fifth game in the match.

Westlake won the fifth game, 16-14, to advance to the championship match.

Sophomore Colby Magorien led Westlake with 18 kills and had 11 digs. Taylor Tattersall, Jacob Delson and Keats Stanley each had 11 kills. Travis Magorien had 53 assists.

Corona del Mar is the Southern Section Division II champ. The Southern California Regional championship match starts at 5 p.m.

In other Southern California Regional semifinal matches, Granada Hills lost to top-seeded Buchanan in four games in the Division I playoffs. Jino Labao had seven kills and six digs to lead Granada Hills.

Burroughs of Burbank lost to Otay Ranch in four games in the other Southern California Regional Division I semifinal. Daniel Jacobs led Burroughs with 12 kills. Tyler Yanez had 32 assists.
