IRVINE -- Top-seeded Downey Calvary Chapel scored three runs in the first inning and three in the seventh to win its first Southern Section softball championship, 6-5, over third-seeded Redlands Citrus Valley.
The rally by Calvary Chapel (26-4) answered a four-run outbust by Citrus Valley (24-6) in the bottom of the sixth inning. A second-year school with no seniors, Citrus Valley's rally was ignited by a leadoff home run by Aerial Carlson, and finished with a two-run single by Sophia Ortega.
That gave the Blackhawks a 5-3 lead, but an RBI double by Larisa Petakoff, a run-scoring error, and a bases loaded hit batter -- Shaylee Eaton was plunked by reliever Nikki Hoffman -- made the difference.
Those were the runs needed by Petakoff, who improved to 23-2 as the Grizzlies won their 17th in a row. Hayley Jaquess (21-5) took the loss.
