Inland Empire: Etiwanda keeps rolling at Oaks Christian tourney

Etiwanda trailed by four points at the half against Moreno Valley Rancho Verde in a quarterfinal Tuesday afternoon at the Westlake Village Oaks Christian tournament, but tightened up its defense in the second half and won, 57-41.

Tyler LaCour scored 19 points and USC-bound senior Byron Wesley had 17 for the Eagles (11-0), who limited Rancho Verde (10-2) to 11 second-half points.

Etiwanda, the top-ranked team in the Inland Empire, moves on to Wednesday's semifinals, where it will play Sacramento High at 7 p.m.

Sacramento is led by senior point guard Josiah Turner, who signed with Arizona. Turner scored 33 points in a 68-55 quarterfinal victory against Los Angeles Price. Turner is ranked by ESPN as the fourth-best point guard in the country.

In the loser’s bracket, Ontario Colony plays Inglewood at 10 a.m., Moreno Valley Canyon Springs plays Pasadena at 11:30 a.m., Upland faces Concord De La Salle at 2:30 p.m. and Price plays Rancho Verde at 4.

Down south at the Holiday Classic, Corona Centennial lost to Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 61-54, in the winner’s bracket of the featured National Division at Torrey Pines High School, leaving Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos as the lone Inland Empire team still unbeaten in the tournament.

The Grizzlies knocked off Cerritos Gahr, 73-67, on Tuesday in the Senator’s Division at San Diego Cathedral Catholic High. Barry Cheaney, a 6-2 senior guard, had a season-high 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Omar Ajanovic, a 6-3 senior forward, scored 17 points.

Rialto Eisenhower, Chino Hills Ayala and San Bernardino won their loser’s bracket games Tuesday. Eisenhower and Ayala will play Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon High.
