Best Bets Aug. 3/4: What to watch

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 3

  • TELEVISION

CLUB FRIENDLY

Guadalajara (Mexico) vs. Barcelona (Spain)

ESPN2 and Galavision, 5 p.m.

Chivas pushed back its visit to Tijuana by a month to play in this World Football Challenge friendly against Europe's champs, who started their participation in the series with a loss to Manchester United.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

San Francisco FC (Panama) at Seattle Sounders

Fox Soccer Channel, 7 p.m.

The Sounders failed in the first leg in Panama and head into the home leg of their preliminary-round series down, 1-0, so this is as must-win as they come. The reward is a spot in the group phase of the region's club championship.

Also

Alianza (El Salvador) at FC Dallas, Fox Soccer Channel, 5 p.m.

Santos (Mexico) at Olimpia (Honduras), TeleFutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 7 p.m.

Copa Sudamericana

Deportivo Anzoategui (Venezuela) at Deportivo Quito (Ecuador), Fox Deportes, 3 p.m.

The Strongest (Bolivia) at Olimpia (Paraguay), Fox Deportes, 5 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Galaxy at Portland Timbers

ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 7:30 p.m.

The Galaxy's unbeaten streak has reached 14 games, but can it survive Timber Joey's chainsaw? David Beckham is back from suspension, so Portlanders won't be too unhappy if L.A. wins.

Also

Real Salt Lake at Sporting Kansas City, MLS Direct Kick, 5:30 p.m.

Philadelphia Union at Chicago Fire, MLS Direct Kick, 6 p.m.

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION

Monterrey at Pumas UNAM

Telemundo (KVEA/Channel 52), 10 p.m.

The showdown between Mexico's last two champs -- the Rayados won last year's Apertura, and Pumas is reigning champ after capturing the Clausura -- is on a three-hour delay. Both have won their first two games.

Also

Estudiantes Tecos at America, TeleFutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 5 p.m.

Cruz Azul at Pachuca, Galavision, 7:30 p.m.

THURSDAY, AUG. 4

  • TELEVISION

FIFA U-20 WORLD CUP

Mexico vs. England

Galavision, 2:50 p.m.

Knockout-stage berths are available to both sides in this Group F finale, and a winner is guaranteed a spot. El Tri is coming off a 3-0 rout of North Korea, but England has not impressed -- both of its games ended 0-0. Replay: ESPNU, 11 p.m.

Also

Brazil vs. Panama, ESPNU, 5:45 p.m.

Copa Sudamericana

Nacional (Paraguay) at San Jose (Bolivia), Fox Deportes, 3 p.m.

Liga de Quito (Ecuador) vs. Yaracuyanos (Venezuela), Fox Deportes, 5 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Motagua (Honduras) at Municipal (Guatemala)

TeleFutura (KFTR/Channel 46), 7 p.m.

The Galaxy will open its CCL campaign Aug. 16 at Home Depot Center against the victor in this preliminary-round series -- Motagua, almost certainly, after its 4-0 romp in last week's first leg.

MEXICAN PRIMERA DIVISION

Puebla at Atlante

Galavision, 7 p.m.

Wednesday's Apertura meeting makes it to the screen a day late. Puebla has real aspirations for something nice this season -- the playoffs would be nice -- and are hoping American winger DaMarcus Beasley, back in North America after seven years in Europe, can help make it so.

Also

Gallos Blancos de Queretaro at Atlas, Galavision, 5 p.m.
