Best Bets: What to watch, where to go

THURSDAY, SEPT. 22

  • TELEVISION

SPANISH LA LIGA

Real Zaragoza at Real Betis

ESPN Deportes, 10 a.m.

It's a common fallacy that only mighty Real Madrid among Spanish clubs carries the royal moniker. Here are two more -- and Betis is off to a 3-0-0 start. And there's also Real Sociedad and, in the second division, Real Valladolid.

Also

Getafe at Espanyol, GolTV, 11 a.m. and midnight

Italian Serie A

Siena at AS Roma, Fox Deportes, 11:30 a.m.; Fox Soccer Plus, 11:40 a.m., 6 p.m. and 1 a.m.

COPA SUDAMERICANA

Santa Fe (Colombia) at Deportivo Cali (Colombia)

Fox Deportes, 6:30 p.m.

Breyner Belalcazar's strike in the 88th minute of the first leg was a big stroke for Cali, which pulled out a 1-1 draw on the road and can claim a berth in the 16-team knockout bracket with a home triumph.

Also

Liga de Quito (Ecuador) at Trujillanos (Venezuela), Fox Deportes, 4 p.m.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Morelia (Mexico) at Motagua (Honduras)

Galavision, 7 p.m.

If the big three -- that's Morelia, the Galaxy and Costa Rican champion Alajuelense -- are going to win their home games, passage to the knockout stage could depend on how each does on its trek to Honduras. Alajuela grabbed all three points on its trip, and the Monarcas need to match that.

Also

Isidro Metapan (El Salvador) at Santos Laguna (Mexico), Galavision, 5 p.m.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S FRIENDLY

Canada at United States

ESPN2, 8 p.m.

The U.S. couldn't make Abby Wambach's 10th-minute penalty kick stand up in the first meeting in the two-game Celebration Series with the neighbors to the north, but it will get another chance for victory in Portland.

College men

Notre Dame at South Florida, Fox Soccer Channel, 4 p.m. and midnight

COLLEGE WOMEN

Portland at UC Irvine

Anteater Stadium (Irvine), 7 p.m.

There are only one or two programs as storied (or more storied) than are the Pilots in women's soccer, and the two-time champs' visit to So Cal is a treat -- even when they're struggling, like now. Portland is an uncharacteristic 4-4-1 after a weekend win over USC. UC Irvine is winless in its last three, all against Bay Area schools, after a 5-0-0 start.

Also

Marymount at Vanguard (Costa Mesa), 6 p.m.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 23

  • TELEVISION

ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIP

Leeds United at Brighton & Hove Albion

Fox Soccer Plus, 11:40 a.m.

Brighton is hardly among England's storied sides, but its American fans have had plenty of reason to celebrate this week: two TV appearances! The Seagulls faced Liverpool in a League Cup clash Wednesday, also on the Plus, and now take a 5-1-1 second-division make against Leeds. Replay: 7 p.m.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Philadelphia Union at Sporting Kansas City

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 5:30 p.m.

The battle for the Eastern Conference regular-season title looks like it will be a real thriller, and the winner here -- if there is a winner -- will overtake Columbus for the top spot. A draw would keep the Crew in first heading into its clash Saturday against the Galaxy.
