Best Bets Oct. 3/4: What to watch

MONDAY, OCT. 3

  • TELEVISION

DUTCH EREDIVISIE

PSV Eindhoven at NEC Nijmegen

ESPN Deportes, 9:30 a.m.

Belgian forward Dries Mertens has made a huge impression, with two hat tricks (one in a four-goal game) and 11 goals in the first seven games since moving to PSV from Utrecht. NEC looks to climb the table in a telecast delayed from Sunday.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

COLLEGE WOMEN

Menlo at Marymount

Home Depot Center Field 5 (Carson), 1 p.m.

The second-year Mariners, from Palos Verdes, are close to .500 -- 4-5-1 -- against a freelance, mostly-NAIA schedule.

TUESDAY, OCT. 4

  • TELEVISION

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

Galaxy at New York Red Bulls

ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, 5 p.m.

The Supporters' Shield would belong to the Galaxy with a victory in MLS's marquee matchup. New York should have been competing for the regular-season title, but it's still looking for a playoff berth what has often been a horrid campaign.

U.S. OPEN CUP

Chicago Fire at Seattle Sounders

Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Deportes, 7 p.m.

The Sounders are looking to become the first club in the MLS era to win America's No. 1 cup competition for the third straight year. Home field has something to do with their run, and they'll be playing in front of 30,000-plus supporters again in this year's final.

  • ON LOCAL FIELDS

COLLEGE WOMEN

Vanguard at Concordia

Concordia Soccer and Track Field (Irvine), 3 p.m.

Loren Kortizija leads fifth-ranked Concordia's dynamic attack, which features five players with at least four goals in a 9-1 start. Orange County rival Vanguard won its first seven before falling in its conference opener to The Master's.

Also

Hope International at Biola (La Mirada), 7 p.m.
