Best Bets Oct. 12/13: What to watch

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 12

  • TELEVISION

COPA SUDAMERICANA

Liga de Quito (Ecuador) at Independiente (Argentina)

Fox Deportes, 5 p.m.

LDU has the advantage after a 2-0 home win in the first leg of this round-of-16 series, but the Argentines have a knack for reversing bad results. Independiente lost first legs in three of four series en route to last year's Sudamericana title, including their semifinal meeting with LDU and from a 2-0 deficit in the final against Brazil's Goias.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER

FC Dallas at Chicago Fire

MLS Direct Kick, 5:30 p.m.

The Chicago Fire is in a desperate thrust for a playoff berth, and a loss -- or tie -- will hurt badly. FC Dallas probably has enough points (46) to get through, but after four successive shutout losses, the Hoops' issues are about something other than the postseason chase.

Also

D.C. United at Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS Direct Kick, 7 p.m.

BRAZILIAN BRASILEIRÃO PETROBRAS

Botafogo at Corinthians

GolTV, 5:30 p.m.

Sao Paulo's Corinthians is clinging to a narrow lead in Brazil's national competition, one point above Vasco da Gama with 10 games to play. Botafogo, from Rio de Janeiro, is in the group just below, five points off the lead -- but with no victories in its last four matches.

Westmont at Azusa Pacific

Cougar Soccer Field (Azusa), 3 p.m.

No. 25 Westmont is 3-0 (and tied for the top spot) in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and No. 3 APU is 2-1. Two longtime NAIA powers battle, and it will impact the GSAC title race.

Point Loma Nazarene at Vanguard (Costa Mesa), 3 p.m.

La Verne at Pomona-Pitzer (Claremont), 4 p.m.

Cal Lutheran at Redlands, 7 p.m.

Occidental at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Claremont), 7 p.m.

UC Irvine at UC Riverside

UCR Soccer Stadium (Riverside), 7 p.m.

The seventh-ranked Anteaters have won three in a row since dropping their conference opener, with victories over the teams picked to finish 1-2 this season, and look to increase their lead in the Big West against a resurgent UCR squad reeling following a 5-0 loss to Cal Poly.
