Chivas USA has a home game in its U.S. Open Cup opener, but the Galaxy won't know whether it's traveling or not until next week's games are complete.
U.S. Soccer on Thursday announced the home assignments for the third round -- Major League Soccer clubs enter the knockout tournament in the third round -- and Chivas USA will play June 29 at Cal State Fullerton against USSF D2 Pro League club Austin Aztex or fourth-tier Arizona Sahuaros, who knocked off the Ventura County Fusion in a first-round game Tuesday.
The Galaxy will play June 29 against AC St. Louis at Home Depot Center or NSC Minnesota Stars at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. Both potential foes play in the second-tier USSF D2 league, which is fully professional.
The Galaxy and Chivas will know their foe after Tuesday's second round. Minnesota will be home against St. Louis.
Austin will play host to the Sahuaros, who are a member of the national semipro/amateur National Premier Soccer League and qualified for the oldest soccer competition in the U.S. through the U.S. Amateur Soccer Association.
The Sahuaros were the only USASA and NPSL team to win its first-round game in the Open Cup, which has been contested since 1914. They won on penalties after a 1-1 draw Tuesday in Ventura with the Fusion, which is the defending champion in the USL Premier Development League, also a fourth-tier semipro/amateur league.
