U.S. OPEN CUP: Galaxy, Chivas USA learn foes

The Galaxy and Chivas USA will play teams from the USSF D2 Pro League next week in their U.S. Open Cup openers.

The Galaxy will face AC St. Louis and Chivas USA will take on the Austin Aztex in the third round of America's oldest soccer competition.

AC St. Louis defeated fellow USSF D2 club NSC Minnesota Stars, 1-0, and Austin scored a 2-1 victory over the Arizona Sahuaros, from the national amateur/semipro National Premier Soccer League, in second-round action Tuesday night.

Major League Soccer clubs enter the tournament, which has been played since 1914, in the third round.

The Galaxy and Chivas will play home games next Tuesday night at 7:30. The Galaxy will play at the Home Depot Center and Chivas at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium.

AC St. Louis and Austin were among five teams to advance from the USSF D2 league, which was formed by U.S. Soccer this year after several clubs left the United Soccer Leagues' professional Division 1 to form a new North American Soccer League. Rather than approve either league for second-division status, U.S. Soccer mandated that teams from both outfits compete in a combined league this season.

The Portland Timbers, slated to make the jump to MLS next season, were among the USSF D2 winners, beating Kitsap Pumas from the USL's Premier Development League, 4-1.

Three teams advancing are from the USL's Second Division, a third-tier pro league. The PDL, like the NPSL, is a national amateur/semipro league.

The Galaxy has twice won the Open Cup, in 2001 and 2005, and also played in the 2002 and 2006 finals. MLS clubs have won the tournament every year but one since the league debuted in 1996.

Quarterfinals will be played July 6-7, Semifinals on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 and the final on Oct. 5.
