Landon Donovan assisted another goal as Everton pulled out a stunning 1-0 triumph Tuesday over English Premier League leader Manchester City, the Toffees' biggest win of the season.
Donovan squared the ball for Darron Gibson to finish in the 60th minute. The Galaxy captain's role in a superb sequence leading to the goal was small but vital -- he took the ball out of the air high on the right side of the box, then pushed it onto Gibson's path -- and it was his fifth assist in seven appearances during a short-term loan spell with Everton.
The goal was Gibson's first since joining the Liverpool-based club earlier this month from Manchester United, which pulled even on points with archrival City after beating Stoke City, 2-0. Both Manchester clubs are 17-3-3 for 54 points, but City has superior goal difference (plus-41 to plus-33).
Everton (8-10-5) won in EPL play for the first time with Donovan on the right flank and vaulted from 14th to ninth in the standings. Half of the league's teams have a game in hand.
The win was the 150th in EPL for Toffees manager David Moyes, who told media “that might be one of the best I've had. I thought it was a brilliant effort and a great result for us. What an effort! It was a great result.”
