OPEN CUP: Chivas gets Blues or Fusion

Major League Soccer clubs enter America's oldest soccer competition in the third round, and now they know, more or less, who they'll be playing.

U.S. Soccer on Wednesday announced pairings for the May 29 U.S. Open Cup games, and the regionalized matchups has Chivas USA staying local, although it's uncertain where the Goats will be playing, and the Galaxy's awaiting next Tuesday's second-round results to know where it will play.

Chivas was matched with the winner of the L.A. Blues-Ventura County Fusion game. If the Blues win next week's encounter, they'll be home against the Goats, playing at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium. No word on a site, or a home team, if Chivas faces the Fusion.

The Galaxy either will be home against Irvine's PSA Elite, a U.S. Adult Soccer Association team with several professional players, or in Cary, N.C., to take on the Carolina RailHawks, the second-tier North American Soccer League's only winless team.

Eric Wynalda's Cal FC, another USASA side with pro representation, would visit the the Portland Timbers if it beats the USL Pro's Wilmington (N.C.) Hammerheads next week.

The Open Cup, with entry available to any team affiliated with U.S. Soccer, has been played since the 1913-14 season. MLS clubs have won all but one title since the league debuted in 1996. The Galaxy won in 2001 and 2005, German club L.A. Kickers captured two titles in the 1950s and '60s, and Maccabi Los Angeles shares the tournament record with five triumphs, the most recent in 1981.

The Seattle Sounders have won the last three Open Cups.

The Blues and Fusion met in a second-round game last year, with L.A. winning, 1-0, to advance to a third-round clash with the Galaxy. The MLS club pulled out a tight 2-1 victory. The Fusion, making its third straight Open Cup appearance, beat the Fullerton Rangers, 6-2, in overtime Tuesday night in a first-round game.

Cal FC, from Thousand Oaks, beat PDL champion Kitsap Pumas and PSA Elite topped 2010 PDL champ Portland Timbers U-23 in first-round games, both by 3-1 tallies.
