Joe Cannon, who posted a shutout in his return to the San Jose Earthquakes' starting lineup last weekend and was set to take on the Galaxy -- his former team -- Saturday in Santa Clara, will undergo surgery Wednesday for a broken left ankle sustained in practice Tuesday.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks.
Cannon, who spent the 2007 season with the Galaxy, lost his starting job to Chicago Fire castoff Jon Busch following Major League Soccer's World Cup break in late June, but Busch fumbled his hold on the position after a clumsy own goal gifted Colorado a 1-0 victory Aug. 7. Cannon, who grew up near San Jose and played at Santa Clara University, was back in the nets for last weekend's 1-0 victory over Kansas City.
"You build a squad to hopefully deal with any problems you have," San Jose (and former Galaxy) coach Frank Yallop told the Quakes' website. "Joe played well against Kansas City, and Jon’s going to be playing now. We’ve very blessed in that position."
