Morelia, one of the better supported Mexican clubs in the L.A. area, lost to Mexico City's Pumas UNAM -- also with a decent local following -- in Sunday's decisive match for the Primera Division's Clausura title.
The good news: The Monarcas might have booked a Home Depot Center encounter with the loss.
Morelia heads to the preliminary round of the upcoming CONCACAF Champions League, and a victory over the Caribbean Championship runner-up, to be determined next weekend, will give it a berth in Group A, along with the Galaxy, Costa Rica's Alajuelense and either Honduras' Motagua or Guatemala's Municipal.
Pumas takes the top spot in Group C and will face Panama's Tauro, FC Dallas or El Salvador's Alianza, and the Canadian champion (FC Toronto or Vancouver Whitecaps) or Nicaragua's Real Esteli.
The preliminary round is July 26-28 and Aug. 2-4, and group play begins in mid-August. CONCACAF has not yet released the match schedule or order.
