Five So Cal clubs are headed to the U.S. Open Cup after the Ventura County Fusion claimed their berth Saturday night.
Danny Barrera (Thousand Oaks/Westlake HS and UC Santa Barbara) scored a goal and set up another in the first 15 minutes and Mark Magee added goals just before halftime and midway through the second half as the Fusion routed the Southern California Seahorses, 4-0, in a USL Premier Development League match at La Mirada High School.
The victory gave the Fusion a 4-0-0 record in PDL Southwest Division games doubling as Open Cup qualifiers, same as Fresno Fuego. The Fusion, which needed only a high-scoring one-goal victory to advance, qualified on goal difference.
Also in the 40-team field:
Galaxy: One of eight MLS clubs that will join in at the third round.
L.A. Blues: The USL Pro side enters in the second round.
Hollywood United: San Diego Flash upsets opened the door for the NPSL's West Division berth.
Doxa Italia: South Bay club won U.S. Amateur Soccer Association's Western Region title.
The Open Cup, a knockout competition dating to 1914 that involves professional, semipro and amateur, clubs begins in mid-June. The title game is set for Oct. 4.
