Dempsey 1st, Donovan 3rd in award tally

Fulham forward Clint Dempsey has won the 2011 Futbol de Primera Player of the Year award, which since 1991 has been awarded annually to the best U.S. national team player in a vote of American soccer media.

Dempsey, a Texan who has starred for the London-based club since 2006, has scored four goals in a dozen appearances this season for the U.S. national team -- three in its run to the CONCACAF Gold Cup title game -- with friendlies remaining Nov. 11 against France outside Paris and Nov. 15 against Slovenia in Ljubljana.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard finished second in the balloting, followed by Galaxy captain Landon Donovan, who has won then award a record seven times, including the previous four years.

Dempsey, 28, also won the honor in 2006.
