Two local players present when the United Soccer Leagues' men's combine began Thursday in Charleston, S.C.: former UCLA defender Brandon Owens and his Orange County Blue Star teammate Josh Borja.
Owens (Murrieta/Murrieta Valley HS) came out of the U.S. under-17 national team residency, played at UCLA from 2003 to 2007 and played for D.C. United's reserve team in 2008.
Borja, a Guam national-team defender from San Diego who just completed his sophomore season at Chico State, is an L.A. Galaxy under-18 alum.
Most of the 101 players at the combine, Owens and Borja included, come from the USL's amateur/semipro Premier Development League. Orange County Blue Star is one of six USL PDL teams in the L.A. area.
