UCLA practice report: Wednesday quick hits

The Bruins were sloppy on offense in practice Wednesday, with several fumbles, interceptions and dropped passes plaguing what coach Rick Neuheisel called a "sluggish" effort.

"Not as good a practice as I wanted today," Neuheisel said "We’ve got to go back and work hard and really make sure we’ve got a great practice tomorrow. It’s vital."

A few notes from the day:

  • Quarterback Kevin Prince missed practice for the second consecutive day because of a knee injury, so part of the problems on offense could be attributed to rustiness for backups Richard Brehaut and Darius Bell. [That's] "Part of it, no question," Neuheisel said. "We’re resting Kevin and hopefully we’ll get him back tomorrow. But we’ll see. We've got to be ready to play if he can’t play."

  • Offensive coordinator Norm Chow said he had full confidence in Brehaut's ability to take over at quarterback because Brehaut ran the first team for most of fall camp while Prince was out because of an oblique strain. But because of the Bruins new-found emphasis on the running game, Chow would not rule out Bell getting significant time because Bell is a running quarterback who ran a Pistol offense last season at City College of San Francisco. "If Kevin doesn’t go, I suppose Darius would get some time, but who knows how the game unfolds," Chow said.

  • Neuheisel said senior F-back Christian Ramirez had been "excused from the team for personal reasons." He did not elaborate, saying only that he hoped he would get Ramirez back at some point. Ramirez missed the Stanford game because of a hamstring strain and was limited against Houston because of the injury. He did not dress for the Texas game and was not at practice Wednesday.
