Just when recruiting pundits thought they had Josh Shirley (Fontana, Calif./Kaiser) all figured out, the highly touted linebacker threw a backdoor curveball on a 3-and-2 count.
Shirley was believed to be choosing between Miami (Fla.) and USC, but instead signed with UCLA in what must be one of the most shocking recruiting announcements in recent years.
Through his Twitter account, Scout.com west football recruiting manager Brandon Huffman simply said, "HOLY WOW." Just minutes after announcing on Prime Ticket, Shirley was a local trending topic on the social networking site.
It was all Shirley's idea, coach Rick Neuheisel claimed.
"Josh and I kept this as a secret for a long time at his request and I'm thrilled with it," Neuheisel said.
Perhaps most shocking is the fact that Shirley signed without ever making an official visit to campus, though Neuheisel said he would be doing so later this month.

"He's going to have a remarkable career," Neuheisel said. "He's a hybrid type of player. We've got him listed as a defensive athlete just because he's got the ability to play both as a linebacker or as an end in that hybrid deal. We've got a couple of odd packages in our defense that (coordinator) Chuck Bullough is kind of champing at the bit to get Josh involved in."
