UCLA center Joshua Smith will be watching what he tweets a little more carefully from now on after incurring some flak over the weekend for a post on his Twitter account after the Bruins' loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday.
On the bus ride home from that 68-58 loss at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, Smith posted "Just lost to some straight bums lol." He deleted the post within a couple of hours or so, but still was admonished by coach Ben Howland, his parents, some teammates and even some of his Twitter followers.
He posted an apology on Twitter on Saturday and Monday apologized while speaking with reporters.
"It was just one of those where it was a little immaturity and I said something I shouldn’t have said," Smith said.
Howland called the tweet "totally inappropriate" said Smith apologized to his teammates during a weekend film session. Athletic Director Dan Guerrero reached out to Loyola Marymount officials to apologize as well.
"You have to win with grace and lose with grace," Howland said. "That’s part of competing. That was unfortunate and he understands it was inappropriate and he feels bad about it."
Smith said he simply got caught up in the frustration of UCLA, ranked No. 17 in the preseason AP poll, losing its opener to a mid-major team from down the road. Smith, considered one of the premier post players in the nation, had only five points and four rebounds in the game.
"It was one of those where at the moment, you just make a choice," Smith said. "At first I didn’t think it was a big deal...but it was one of those things where if I had to do it again, I would just never say it."
