Bad night for Malcolm Lee doubters

Take a look at the numbers Jimmer Fredette put up Wednesday night in No. 9 Brigham Young's 71-58 win over No. 4 San Diego State.

For those wanting to stay on the page: 43 points on 14-for-24 shooting, including 5-for-8 on three-pointers. It was Fredette's third 40-point performance in the last four games. He leads the country with an average of 27.4 points per game.

UCLA's Malcolm Lee, who coach Ben Howland pegged as the nation's best wing defender, held Fredette to 25 points in an 86-79 win at the Wooden Classic on Dec. 18. Seven of Fredette's points came on free throws; eight came in the first five minutes. Fans might complain about Lee's scoring -- he's averaging only 12.8 points in 31.5 minutes -- but there's no questioning his defensive abilities.

The Wooden Classic loss is still BYU's only defeat of the season, which obviously boosts UCLA's NCAA tournament résumé.
