USC announced it will open its 2014 football schedule at home against Fresno State, the alma mater of Trojans coach Lane Kiffin.
The game, just the third between the schools, will be played Aug. 30, 2014 in the Coliseum. Unless USC's other games are rescheduled, Fresno State will be the Trojans' season opener that year.
“We are excited to add Fresno State to our 2014 schedule,” Kiffin said in a statement. “It is a quality in-state opponent with a traditionally strong program. The games between the teams in the past have been very competitive and have attracted lots of fans from both sides.”
Kiffin, who was a quarterback for the Bulldogs from 1994 to 1996 and later a student assistant coach, is right -- the games have been very competitive. In the teams' last matchup, a memorable 2005 shootout at the Coliseum, No. 1 USC came back to beat No. 16 Fresno State, 50-42, behind 513 all-purpose yards from running back Reggie Bush.
In their first meeting in 1992, unranked Fresno State upset No. 23 USC 24-7 in the Freedom Bowl in Anaheim.
The Trojans will also play Notre Dame and Boston College in nonconference play in 2014.
