Jackson leaves, Turene commits

Just as one Trojan departs, another will enter.

Junior defensive end Malik Jackson said Monday he will transfer to Tennessee, hours after linebacker Kent Turene (Sunrise, Fla./Boyd Anderson) announced he has committed to USC in the class of 2011.

And, like three other 2011 commits, Turene will graduate high school early and join USC in January. In doing so, he's joining quarterback Cody Kessler (Bakersfield, Calif./Centennial), kicker Andre Heidari (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) and long-snapper Peter McBride (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral).

Heidari's and McBride's scholarship offers were reportedly contingent on early enrollment, thus saving USC scholarships for the fall of 2011.

Turene, rated the No. 8 linebacker in the nation by ESPNU, has not visited USC. But — while he will not rule out taking more official visits — he said the coaching staff was persuasive enough as it was.

"I just felt right with the coaches," Turene told ESPN's Justin Hopkins. "The opportunity to be coached by the greatest in the country was too much to pass up."

Turene is USC's 11th commit for the class of 2011 and second linebacker, after inside linebacker Tre Madden (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo), who committed in May.
